If you aren’t singing nursery rhymes while you do squats yet, you will be after you take one of the new Port City Strollers fitness classes!
Courtney Ceponis is the owner of Port City Strollers and she is launching a new stroller fitness program aimed at parents who want to put exercise back into their lives and have fun and connect with their child and other parents at the same time.
Courtney’s husband, Peter, is in the military and they were living in North Carolina when she had their now nine-month-old son, Gordon. She says that despite being a certified fitness instructor, a veteran marathon runner, and a registered dietitian, she’s no stranger to the challenges that come with being a new mom and trying to find the time, energy, and motivation to work out.
“One of the biggest things I struggled with when becoming a new mom was anxiety and a lack of confidence - constantly wondering if I'm doing everything alright, reacting appropriately, meeting the needs of my new baby adequately,” she explains. “So to incorporate exercise into that struggle I needed a safe place where I could workout where anything and everything could happen and it would be okay and would build my self esteem.”
She found a place there that not only welcomed her and Gordie to workout with them, but offered encouragement, support, and a great exercise routine that met her changing needs post-birth. She loved that she could bring her baby with her too as her husband was often away for work.
She moved to Halifax this past summer and she now wants to create that same supportive community for other parents in her new home. She's launching a new parent and tot stroller fitness class in the city in January, and hosting two free trial sessions this month.
She promises to give you a well-rounded, full body workout, while providing entertainment for you and your kids, “We keep our classes entertaining by including stationary exercises interspersed with changes of scenery and songs for the kids.”
Have no fear if your baby is unpredictable or if you're worried you may not be up for a "full body workout" every class. Courtney has lots of tricks to keep babies happy during class and, if all else fails, she understands that some days you may need to move at a slower pace than usual.
The sixty minute long class is a combination of cardio and strength training with different exercises each class to keep everyone having fun. It is stroller based (a jogger is best but any kind will work except an umbrella stroller) and no other special equipment is needed except indoor sneakers and, if possible, a yoga mat for stretching.
It’s appropriate for all fitness levels as she can adjust the exercises based on your needs. Little ones should be at least six weeks old and moms should be cleared by their doctor for postpartum exercise.
Port City Strollers will be launching at two locations in January - a perfect time to get started on those New Year’s Resolutions! They will be held on Tuesdays at 9:30am at 7171 Clinton Avenue in the gym at Bethany United Church; and Fridays at 9:00am at 14 Purcell’s Cove Road in the Chocolate Lake facility; with more times and locations added in the new year.
FREE TRIAL CLASSES
Courtney wants to give interested parents (and babes) a chance to try out the classes and meet some other parents before the program starts in January so she’s offering two FREE classes this month!
Both will be in the gym at the Bethany United Church, on December 12 and December 19 at 9:30AM. Register for the free classes via the email or phone number below.
INTRODUCTORY PRICING SPECIAL
She’s also offering an introductory pricing special to attend as many classes as you want, at either location, by paying only $45 per month or $120 for three months (pssst...this is the point where you forward this to your partner or that family member who still hasn’t gone shopping for a gift for you yet - or just treat yourself to this right now and tuck it in your Christmas stocking; trust me, you deserve it Mama).
