Greater Halifax Area Baby and Toddler Adventures (January 27-February 2, 2017)

There are lots of fun activities on the horizon for little ones in our round-up this week* with Baby Boxes, books, camouflage, eagle and winter being celebrated, along with so much more. Check out our listings for outings and adventures for our newest, and tiniest, Haligonians (ages 0-2, though some programs allow the big kids too!).

SATURDAY

Family Literacy Day Book Giveaway

They will be giving away 2000 Disney books at the Dartmouth North Community Centre to celebrate Family Literacy Day! There will also be music, author readings, princess visits and refreshments. The event is on from 12:00-4:00. Full schedule of readings and visit can be found here.

Eagle Watch

If you're looking for a weekend Day Trip, head on down to Sheffield Mills in the Annapolis Valley for Eagle Watch, eagle displays, live music and a pancake breakfast from 8:30am-12:30pm.  

SUNDAY

Winterfest at the Gordon R, Snow Community Centre (Fall River)

This free event runs from 1-4 and has everything from hot chocolate and roasting marshmallows, to (weather permitting) snowshoeing and snow building competitions. There will also be indoor games and crafts regardless of the weather. Donations are being accepted for Phoenix Centre at the event. For more details see the flyer here.

MONDAY

Nova Scotia Baby Box Launch Party

Have you heard about the new Baby Box program yet? They provide all new parents with a sleep-certified box, complete with a mattress, waterproof cover and cotton fitted sheet - and it meets Health Canada's requirements for a safe sleeping environment!  The launch is being held at ChiroCare at #106-20 Duke Street in Bedford from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m and they will be distributing the first round of boxes that day. Hop online to register now and then attend the launch event to be the first to get a Baby Box!

Breastfeeding Support

Every Monday from 11:00-12:00 there is a free Breastfeeding Support group at Nurtured Products for Parenting. This is a great place for support, advice and meeting other moms and babes at the same stage of life as you.

TUESDAY

Wee Wild Ones! at the Museum of Natural History

This program is for children 5 and under and is held from 10-11 each Tuesday. There is a different program each week and activities such as stories, puppet shows, block building and more are used to explore the theme. This week's theme is camouflage!

WEDNESDAY

Welcome Wednesdays at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

This two hour weekly program runs each Wednesday through the winter and spring and is for ages 0-5 every week from 10 am to 12 noon. There are age-appropriate self and staff guided activities through the museum, along with activity and colouring sheets, the puppet theatre will be set out to play with along with crafts for all children.

Preschool Indoor Playground

This indoor playground at 1129 Sackville Drive is open Wednesdays and Thursdays through the winter and spring from 9:00-11:00 and costs $2 per child. Children must wear indoor shoes. You can see ourreview here.

THURSDAY

Cloth Diaper Workshop at Nurtured Products for Parenting

Considering cloth diapering your babe? This introductory workshop will break it all down for you and introduce you to everything you need to know to make the decision. The cost is $5 and you will need to register for it in advance.

DAILY

Gus Walk at the NS Museum of Natural History

Join Halifax's favourite tortoise as he gets out of his house and goes for a stroll around the museum and eats a snack. Regular admission rates apply ($4.05 for children, $6.30 for adults). 

Family Drop-In With NS Health Authority

"Visit us in your community for breastfeeding assessment and assistance, parenting support and other health information. At some drop-ins a Public Health Nurse facilitates group education sessions on a variety of topics including parenting, growth and development, nutrition, safety and crying. As well, some drop-ins offer Breastfeeding Buddies a peer support program facilitated by a Public Health Nurse."

This free program runs on various days of the week throughout the city and is for all parents with young children looking for support, information or just to meet other parents. Their schedule can be found on their website.

Halifax Public Library Programs

The library has daily free programs for children ages 0-5 across the city. Check out their website and enter your location and age you're looking for to find what's happening in your area. *Some programs require registration.

Halifax Recreation Programs

Halifax Recreation offers drop-in playgroups and programming across the city. Check out their catalogue to see what's in your area. Most are very affordable (for example $3/family for some groups). You can also search their Reconnect system to narrow down the age and area.
